The standard org chart is about reporting lines, and vertical career progress within functions; it really doesn’t say much about how things actually get done or about collaboration and rich communication. Is there an alternative?

Of course IT still matters

But not in the way it did 20 years ago. Increasingly, it’s not where the work gets done, but how, when and by whom. It looks like this will be a moving target for at least a couple of decades. One clear implication is the need to stay flexible, and avoid hardening of the IT.

When is a service not like a service?

Services used to be local monopolies with captive audiences, but no longer. The competitive arena keeps growing; for some sectors to a global scale. Services are beginning to look a lot like manufacturing, complete with low cost competition, outsourcing and off-shoring.
